Philosopher's Café
Pluralism and the Will of the People: What Differences can Democracy Tolerate?
Host: Brandon De Jong, MA, JD, RDP Philosophy Instructor
To what extent is pluralism compatible with democracy? Is a society that respects and promotes social, economic, and philosophical differences amongst its citizens inherently more democratic than a society that does not? Are there times when such differences might hinder the democratic pursuit of freedom and equality for all? In this Café, we will explore these and related questions, testing along the way some of our commonly-held assumptions about the nature and value of democracy.
The Philosopher's Café promotes open, meaningful dialogue where participants can share ideas and broaden their perspective by considering the views of others.
