Philosopher's Café

From Tatooine to Taylor: A Journey Through Fandom in a Galaxy Not So Far Away

This talk will explore eudemonic fandoms, a type of fandom that facilitates the search for life’s meanings and purposes, and the phenomenon of how fans’ pleasures and search for meaning can decrease when interacting with other fans. Using Swifties and Star Wars fans as case studies, we’ll explore some fans’ hatred of each other and their fan objects and ask: “does this hatred increase the pleasure?”

Hosts:
Dr. Anah-Jayne Samuelson
Anah is an English instructor with a background in children’s and young adult literature, and youth studies. She would like to call herself a Swiftie but doesn’t feel like she’s cool enough.

Dr. Stephen Brown
Stephen is a Psychology instructor who specializes in cognitive neuroscience and statistics. He readily admits his nerdiness and enjoys all matters Star Wars.
