Philosopher's Café

Topic: Culturally Sensitive AI? A Preliminary Survey of AI Image Captioning

Presenters: Dr. Choon-Lee Chai (Sociology Instructor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Red Deer Polytechnic) and Dr. Randy Lin (Assistant Professor, Digital Healthcare Innovation Lab, School of Computer Science and Technology, Algoma University)

The fledging generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) has begun to be used in cultural interpretation, and efforts are being made to create culturally aware, sensitive, and inclusive generative AI. One area of research about inclusive AI focuses on the efficacy of generative AI in mimicking human intelligence in image captioning. Image captioning involves readings of cultural nuances hidden behind an image, the misreading of which could hurt or cause harm.

What AI can accomplish in developing culturally sensitive image captions remains to be seen. This is a developing research area that increasingly demands a response from academics. Studying AI image captioning also provides a window into understanding the limits and possibilities of generative AI in mimicking human intelligence.

Dr. Chai has been researching AI image caption generation with Dr. Lin at the Digital Healthcare Innovation Lab, School of Computer Science and Technology, Algoma University.

Their presentation shares information about AI image caption generation, its technique, possibilities and limitations.

The Philosopher's Café promotes open, meaningful dialogue where participants can share ideas and broaden their perspective by considering the views of others.
